As Recommend in Sunday Times Magazine
Tribulus Terrestris or "Puncture Vine", traditionally
used in the treatment of prostate and urinary difficulties,
has more recently been found by Eastern European athletes to
be effective as a performance enhancer, increasing strength
& endurance during workouts. It has also been reported to
have a stimulating effect on the immune, sexual and
reproductive systems, with improved muscle building, stamina
and endurance. Other positive changes observed in a number
of cases are reduction in cholesterol, enhanced mood and
well-being.
Men:
In men, it stimulates the secretion of leutinising
hormone (LH), which in turn stimulates the gonads to produce
more testosterone. In one study of men aged 28-45, it
increased testosterone levels by as much as 30% over a
five-day period. Other studies using Tribulus have shown an
increase in sperm production and motility, as well as
increased sexual activity.
Studies on 212 men at The Chemical Pharmaceutical
Institute in Sofia, Bulgaria on Tribulus showed improved
reproductive functions and indicated that it increases
libido, frequency and strength of erections and sexual
reflexes (recovery from sexual activity).
Other positive changes include reduced cholesterol
levels, and positive psychological effects such as improved
mood and increased self-confidence. No adverse effects were
noted in clinical studies.
Women:
Tribulus has been found to improve
libido and alleviate vasomotor and neuro-psychic symptoms of
the menopause (hot flushes, depression & emotional
instability). Regular use of Tribulus for several months
often significantly decreases intensity and occurrences of
hot flushes, insomnia, general tenseness, sweating,
insomnia, irritability, depression, apathy & loss of sexual
interest. Two thirds of women treated reported increased sex
drive after using Tribulus. In studies the effect of a 45%
extract of tribulus was found to be equivalent and in some
cases, even better in relieving many menopausal symptoms
than an estrogen/testosterone hormonal preparation.
Furthermore it did not cause the adverse side effects of the
estrogen/testosterone preparation which included
virilisation (masculini-sation) and weight gain.
Liver:
The liver is a major synthesizer of hormones.
They are synthesized from cholesterol, so a herb such as
Tribulus that has a stimulating effect on the liver, will
have a major influence on cholesterol and other products of
the liver. Tribulus’ role as a liver tonic is very important
- breaking down the cholesterol and fats that inhibit
healthy liver function. The cholesterol and fats are
converted to hormones and energy, resulting in increased
performance and stamina. This role of improving liver
function, stamina and endurance is particularly beneficial
to athletes and bodybuilders.
No adverse effects to the central nervous
or cardiovascular systems were noted in any of the clinical
studies
